Another Pet Food Recall

A friend of mine forwarded these lists of new products recalled due to the wheat gluten or salmonella problems. I am just so glad that our Midnight's extra-special $$ Royal Canin low-protein food isn't a problem. Though she's beginning to get to be really tired of just the one food, to the point that she's eating the dry food instead of the pouches. Finicky cat, indeed! It's worrisome that some of the dry versions of Royal Canin veterinary "prescription foods" have recently been added to the lists.

All the foods listed so far
Costco
Natural Balance

When I first heard about these food problems, killing our loving companions, I immediately remembered a Ron Howard film from 25 years ago. Bitter Harvest was a difficult movie to watch and very thought-provoking, but it didn't seem to register with many.

Dear gods, we are destroying the planet and making our food dangerous to eat. I'm not particularly religious, though I learned a lot about the Christian Bible as a kid; this is the beginning of a nasty 'reaping what we have sown.'

I had no idea. Thanks for posting about this.

CBM- I'm really starting to feel cagey about the human and animal food supply. This whole going off the grid may be more appealing after everything. Bri

Another good site for information about the pet food recall and its implication is the blog at www.petconnection.com. They live blog the FDA press conferences.

The next round of voting, I will vote for Green Party, even though I know I will lose. Just to let the politician know that our earth is in danger.

Thanks for the list. I am so glad that my kitties prefer dry, as very few of these foods have the contamination problems.

Thanks, I'm feeling ok for the moment-just more discomfort now than pain. I don't look forward to surgery... but I definitely don't want to have another bout of pain like the first attack. Take care, and Happy Knitting.

This is so horrible isn't it? Along with the cannibal chicken feed and a litany of other things. I didn't see Bittersweet Harvest but just watched Children of Men and it was very thought-provoking, too.
Funny, Bri - my DH is from a farm background and a "Survivor Guy" fan - he's started talking about getting off the grid. I guess as long as I could still knit...

Kinda goes to show that it really might not matter which brand you buy-the "good" brands are on the list as well as the cheap stuff.

I've been reading about "local food" movements, which are just about impossible for folks who live in Arizona and Alaska, but the rest of us should consider.

When you think that America use to be the bread basket of the world, you have to wonder just what the hell happened. Now we are buying wheat from China. Oh right they have like the worst food safety record in the world.
I try to buy local and there is plenty of produce if you can find it. Grocery stores don't want to be bothered with local suppliers. They buy from the giant food growers. We don't eat fruits or veggies out of season. Yes Strawberries in Jan sound lovely, but they taste awful and I don't trust the producers. But even eating American can be dangerous. Just look at the Spinach scare.
My advice is wash everything twice, even if it says it has been cleaned and don't trust anyone. Their bottom line is to make money, our bottom line is to try not to get ill eating dinner.
For some reason I had the wrong blog address in my link, Barbara. I have fixed it and added you blog to my Google feed. I am a dork
